How to Care for Opals
Opals are a lovely stone with much character, making them nice stones to have on jewelry. But once you have some opal jewelry, it can help to know a few basic tips on caring for them, as they are unique stones indeed.
The first thing to do is to make sure you know if you have a doublet or a triplet. If you do, you need to be sure not to ever immerse it in hot water. So don't wash the dishes with them on. The reason for this is that there is a crystal cap on the doublet and triplet, and the hot water could deteriorate it and ruin the jewelry.
A second issue is that opals are actually quite delicate. They are relatively easy to bang and scratch, and with daily wear their polish and shine can decrease quite quickly. So the best thing to do is only wear your opal jewelry on special occasions when you know you want be involved in active things. However, if your opal jewelry does get banged up and scratched or loses its shine, you can try something before taking it into a professional jeweler for polishing. Try using toothpaste and a soft cloth to polish it. A dry cloth will heat up the stone too much, so follow these instructions.
Again, opals are a lovely stone to have. Often people will ask about them if you are wearing them because they have such personality. So keep your opals beautiful and take care of them.
